About

Hugh Durnford-Dionne is a motion designer and documentary filmmaker based in Montreal. He filmed and edited Last Respects, a documentary exploring what happens to the bodies that go unclaimed after death in Montreal, which won the award for Best Canadian Short Documentary at Hot Docs. He wrote and directed Charlotte’s Illustrated World, a short documentary about a Toronto-based illustrator, broadcast nationally on CBC Arts. His latest project, The Steppers Visit South Africa, follows a Montreal-based dance group’s trip to South Africa, exploring both the personal heritage and the roots of the art form. It won Best Short Doc and Audience Choice Award at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival & the Festival of Recorded Movement in Vancouver, respectively.
Through his background in both animation and academia, Hugh gravitated towards the transformative power of motion graphics and documentary filmmaking’s ability to illustrate concepts from philosophy, etymology, and other humanities in a digestible and engaging way.
